Star Wars Episode VII: The Rise of the Open Networker

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Tensions are mounting in the LinkedIn Republic between a class of merchants known as LIONs and the Corporate Empire. Striving to increase their access to the wealth of information available through fellow Republic members, LIONs have aggressively grown their networks beyond the magical 500+ into the tens of thousands.

The Corporate Empire, suspected of being led by a Sith Lord, has sensed its power being threatened by the LIONs and has begun an assault on rebel forces. Suddenly, error messages are rife throughout the Republic (“LinkedIn Will Be Back Soon!”, “Page Load Error”, “Connection Interrupted”, “Address Book Not Available”). Network speeds get slower the larger one's network grows, invitations are capped at 3,000, and the Empire liberally employs its secret weapon, the IDK Death Star, to restrict, suspend and destroy rebel accounts. With the invention of the Corporate Solutions Package, the Empire has turned thousands of Republic members to the dark side by offering ultimate network reach in exchange for thousands of dollars.

LIONS, led by Jedi Knights such as Dave Mendoza (Six Degrees) and Marc Freedman (myLink500), have created sophisticated networking advancement weapons like LION registries, invitation lists, blogs and forums (www.sixdegreesfromdave.com, www.recruitingblogs.com, www.myLink500.com, www.toplinked.com, www.themetanetwork.com). They are also fighting back using the Republic's group system. There are no penalties associated with joining groups and they allow free contact between group members. The battle has no end in sight and casualties are mounting. But through organization, communication and unity, the LIONs might just come out ahead.

May the force be with you always.
